Research for music videos

Carol Vernalis's Theory

  • The usual rules of ‘continuity’ editing which is editing usually found in classic broadcast fiction, are broken to draw attention to what is on the screen.
  • Edits could be very obvious to draw attention to them, e.g. wipes and special effects added, jump cuts are usually used also.
  • A master shot – a base track – is often used to give the video a structure.
  • The camera may also move in time with the music.

An example of Carol's theory is...

This video illustrates Carol's theory because it has most of what she talks about. One of them is that there is an extremely large amount of special effects, wipes, jumps cuts etc in this video; in fact, the whole video is made up of these effects.
There are clearly base tracks in this video which is also another aspect which Carol mentioned.
Another point is that the camera moves along with the beat and timing on the music, such as when the music slows down, so does the camera.
