RESEARCH:

Analysis of a music video that you consider to be a good example of the music video form:

Intended Audience:

I think that the intended gaze is for both young men and women, i think this because the lyrics can relate to both genders 'wait your turn' and i think it especially relates to men because of the 'male gaze' and Laura Mulveys theory on representation in music videos, seeing as Rihanna is a very attractive woman this gaze refers to her strongly.

Genre:

I believe Rihanna's genre of music to be Pop and R&B especially this video.

Narrative/Structure:

I believe this music video to be disjuncture as there is little relation between the music video and the lyrics of the song, the music video is pretty much her walking around singing with lots of effective effects but there is no meaning to the video that link to those of the song, so if you want to know the meaning of the song you must listen to it and try not to get distracted by the goings on in the video.

Media Language:

Firstly the music video is in black and white which makes the video visably very effective to the audience as it is appealing and attractive. At the beginning of the video you see her walking but your also see her face two, its showing two of her at once which is very eye grabbing and intriguing. There is alot of flashing white light and a constant blur throughout the video which makes you try to keep captivated on her face as shes singing the words. There are also many closeups of her face and side profiles, which suggests the video is aimed to keep you looking at Rihanna, and she looks and points directly at the camera, trying to communicate with the chosen audience. The video follows her as she sings and walks through different locations. With the video flashing and vibrating to the beat of the music, it is also very effective to watch.

Representation:

Rihanna is presented in a very sexual way throughout her video with the camera getting segmented on particular parts of her body to appeal to this 'male gaze' she is also dressed in quite dark clothes and dark eyes to lookmore intense along with the dark background and black and white themed colour effect. Throughout the video you cannot take your eyes off Rihanna and it is incredibly intriguing to the audience.

In conclusion i think this is a great example of a music video, the editing in this video is incredible with the amount of effects that lead you to be so intriguied with the video you cannot take your eyes of the artist which in turn promotes Rihanna in a way that you feel you need to watch her again, which is what the aim of a music video is to do. although there is not much meaning to the video you dont seem to care as it is so effective and appealing you will want to watch the video again and again.
