Summerise what i have learnt about the importance of music videos to both the industry and fans
Due to the dramatic change in the music industry over the years the structure of the music industry has changed dramatically, the way people listen and consume music is different for example the switch from mtv to youtube, consumders have a more active approach to music and the illegial consumption of music which has cost the industry millions.
This has lead artists to endorcement and cinegys to find new ways of making money eg Hardware. Digitally singles and albums have gone up but it is not music videos tht is raising money for artists, 3/4 of these downloads are illegial. However not all downloads are illegial, downloads are available on itunes they take 13% of any download cost. Furthermore there is amazon than conducts convientiantly to consumers and it is also cheap. Moreover there is streaming that allows music to be delivered on demand which artists dont seem to mind as these sites are used as advertisements for music labels social networking sites also promote music eg facebook, twitter, google +, youtube, where artists promote their own music, like Nicki Minaj who builds her own fanbase by personally communicating with fans via twitter. There is a high commercialisation of music through the tv.
Although it is the artist who creates musi and puts alot into their work, it is not them who owns the music it is the artist's main aim to get signed by a label to promote their music to a target audience and sell a maximum number of albums. A music video originally is meant to promote the audience however it is also there to sell the song and then the album - youtube allows you to access te song for free anytime creating new fans.
Furthermore over the years the ownership of music labels for example from 2004 there was the big four, Universal, Sony, Emi and Warner, Now there is the big 3 Universal, Warner and Sony, Emi has recently been bought out by Universal (1.9 Billion deal).
The music industry is split into two sides - Mainstream and independant.
Mainstream:
- Large audiences
- Large organisations
- Aim to saturate markets
- High production values
- 'Majors'
Independant:
- small organisations
- Work independantly
- Work with niche genres and specific markets
Who owns music?
The record labels
Aim of an artist?
